1. Introduction and scope
GTRYP LLC ("GTRYP", "we", "our" or "us") operates the website located at gtryp.com and the related newsletter and services (collectively, the "Services"). This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect from readers, how we use that information, the circumstances under which we share it with third parties, the retention periods we apply, the rights that you, the reader, have with respect to your personal information, and the ways in which you can exercise those rights.
This Policy applies whenever you visit gtryp.com, subscribe to our newsletter, submit a contact form, apply to a role advertised on our Careers page, engage with us on any social media account operated by GTRYP, or otherwise interact with our editorial team. It does not apply to third party websites that may be linked from our articles; those websites are governed by their own privacy policies and we encourage you to read them before providing personal information.
GTRYP LLC is the data controller for the personal information described in this Policy. Our contact details for privacy matters appear at the end of this document.
2. Personal information we collect
We collect only the information that is necessary to operate the Services and to fulfil the specific request you have made. Broadly, the categories of information we collect are: (a) contact information you provide voluntarily, such as your name, email address, and country of residence when you subscribe to the newsletter or send us a message; (b) technical information collected automatically when you visit the site, such as your IP address, browser type, browser language, device type, operating system, screen size, referring URL, pages viewed and the time and duration of your visit; (c) any additional information you choose to include in a message you send us; and (d) recruitment information such as a CV, cover letter and references, if you apply for a role advertised on our Careers page.
We do not knowingly collect financial account information, government identifiers, precise geolocation data, health information, or information about religious or political beliefs. We do not sell products directly through the site, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from persons under sixteen years of age. If you believe that a child has provided us with personal information, please write to editors@gtryp.com and we will delete that information promptly.
Some of the technical information we collect is aggregated and cannot be linked back to a specific individual. Where that is the case we treat the information as non-personal.
3. Sources of personal information
The vast majority of the personal information we hold about you is provided directly by you when you interact with the Services. In a limited number of cases we receive information from third parties: for example, if you sign in to the newsletter through a partner platform, that platform will share your email address with us at the time you consent to the subscription. We do not purchase mailing lists, and we do not obtain personal information from data brokers.
4. How we use your information
We use the information we collect for the following purposes: to deliver the newsletter you have subscribed to; to respond to messages you send through the contact form; to consider your application to a role advertised on our Careers page; to analyze site usage in aggregate so that we can improve the editorial content and the layout of the site; to protect the Services against fraud, abuse and unauthorized access; to comply with applicable law; and, in rare cases, to protect our rights, the rights of readers, or the security of the Services.
We do not use your personal information to build detailed advertising profiles, and we do not participate in behaviourally targeted advertising networks. Any advertising displayed on the site is contextual and displayed in fixed banner areas, not personalized to the individual reader.
We do not use your information for any form of automated decision-making that produces legal or similarly significant effects on you.
5. Legal bases for processing (EEA, UK and Switzerland)
Where the General Data Protection Regulation, the UK GDPR or the Swiss Data Protection Act applies, we rely on the following legal bases for our processing: (i) your consent, in the case of the newsletter subscription and any optional cookies; (ii) the performance of a contract, in the case of a Careers application you have submitted; (iii) our legitimate interests in operating and improving the Services, in the case of general site analytics and security monitoring; and (iv) compliance with a legal obligation, where the law requires us to retain or disclose information.
You may withdraw your consent to any consent-based processing at any time. Withdrawing consent will not affect the lawfulness of any processing conducted before the withdrawal.
6. Cookies and similar technologies
We use a small number of cookies and comparable technologies, including strictly necessary cookies that make the site work, functional cookies that remember your preferences, and a limited set of analytics cookies. Please refer to our separate Cookie Policy for full details of the specific cookies used, their purpose, their duration, and how to manage or refuse them.
You may change your cookie preferences at any time through the Cookie Settings link in the footer of the site.
7. Sharing your information
We share personal information only with the service providers who help us operate the Services, such as our email delivery provider, our hosting provider, our analytics provider, and, where applicable, our applicant tracking system. Each of these providers is contractually bound to process personal information only on our instructions and to apply appropriate security safeguards. A list of our current service providers is available on request.
We do not sell personal information. We do not rent or trade personal information. We do not share personal information with advertising networks. We may disclose personal information if we are required to do so by law, by a valid court order, or by a lawful request from a public authority acting within its jurisdiction.
In the event of a merger, acquisition, reorganisation or sale of assets, personal information may be transferred to a successor entity, subject to appropriate confidentiality arrangements and, where required, to prior notice to affected individuals.
8. International data transfers
GTRYP LLC is based in the United States and the majority of our service providers are also located in the United States. If you access the Services from outside the United States, please be aware that the information we collect will be transferred to and processed in the United States, which may have data protection laws that differ from those of your country.
When we transfer personal information from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland to the United States or to any other jurisdiction that has not been the subject of a European Commission adequacy decision, we do so on the basis of the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses, the UK International Data Transfer Addendum, or a comparable transfer mechanism. Copies of the relevant transfer instruments are available on request.
9. Retention
We retain personal information for as long as it is needed for the purposes described in this Policy, or for as long as we are required to retain it by law. Newsletter subscribers' email addresses are retained until they unsubscribe, and then deleted from active systems within thirty days. Messages sent through the contact form are retained for up to three years and then deleted or anonymized. Careers applications are retained for a maximum of twelve months from the closing date of the role, unless you consent to a longer retention period.
Aggregated and de-identified analytics data may be retained indefinitely, because it is no longer personal information.
10. Your rights
Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the right to request access to the personal information we hold about you, to request that we correct inaccurate information, to request that we delete your information, to object to certain processing, to restrict certain processing, and to request that we transfer your information to another controller in a structured, commonly-used, machine-readable format. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
Readers in California have specific rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act and its amendments, including the right to know what personal information we have collected in the preceding twelve months, the right to delete that information, the right to correct that information, and the right to opt out of any sale or sharing of personal information. Since we do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising, no opt-out is required, but you may exercise the other rights by contacting us.
To exercise any of these rights, please write to editors@gtryp.com. We may need to verify your identity before we act on your request, particularly for requests to access or delete information. We will respond within thirty days, and in any event within the period required by applicable law.
11. Security
We apply reasonable technical and organizational safeguards to protect personal information against unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure or destruction. These include encryption in transit, access controls, staff training, and vendor due diligence. However, no method of transmission over the internet or method of electronic storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
In the event of a personal data breach that is likely to result in a risk to the rights and freedoms of individuals, we will notify the relevant supervisory authority and, where required, the affected individuals within the time frames specified by applicable law.
12. Third party services and links
The Services include links to third party websites, businesses, tour operators, accommodation providers and other resources mentioned in our articles. GTRYP does not control these third parties and is not responsible for their content, privacy practices, or availability. Before you provide personal information to any linked service, please read that service's own privacy notice.
13. Do Not Track
Some browsers include a "Do Not Track" signal that allows you to indicate a preference not to be tracked across the web. There is no established industry consensus on how to interpret this signal, and the Services do not currently respond to Do Not Track signals. You can, however, manage the cookies that would otherwise enable tracking through the Cookie Settings link.
14. Changes to this Policy
We may update this Policy from time to time to reflect changes to our practices or to the legal environment. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page and, for material changes, we will notify newsletter subscribers by email and post a notice on the site. Your continued use of the Services after the effective date of any modification constitutes your acceptance of the updated Policy.
